The Sippican Catalyst: How A Case Study Sparked The Creation Of Zeymo

To me, the Harvard Business School case study of Sippican Corporation, a fictional manufacturing company, served as an eye-opener to the often-underestimated role of advanced IT tools in the manufacturing industry.


The case study was about a manufacturer that allocated all fixed costs equally across all product lines. On the surface, this practice appeared logical. However, when the cost structure was scrutinized more deeply, a startling reality emerged: a product line assumed profitable because of high volume was less so due to labor-intensive requirements. Conversely, a product line once thought to be a loss-maker was surprisingly profitable due to low labor costs.


A couple of years later, as I was managing a factory, I witnessed firsthand the dramatic impact of inaccurate cost allocation practices on profitability. This experience drove home the importance of advanced IT tools in providing the necessary insights for strategic decision-making and ultimately, affecting the company’s bottom line.

Yet, for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), access to such sophisticated tools was limited. Many were stuck with outdated software options that were incapable of delivering the essential insights needed for success.
